Prior to joining Metal Strategies, George was Director of Manufacturing Services, Product and Process Improvement, and Customer Satisfaction at6.0 million ton per year integrated and EAF sheet multi-plant steelmaker Severstal North America from 2008 to 2011, reporting directly to the CEO. The 2.5 million ton integrated plant in Dearborn MI was acquired by AK Steel for $707 million, and the new 3.4 million ton EAF-based sheet plant in Columbus MS was acquired by Steel Dynamics Inc. for $1.63 billion, both deals completed in September 2014.

Prior to this, George was Senior Vice President and Director of Manufacturing Services, Product and Process Improvement, and Customer Satisfaction held the same position for integrated and EAF sheet steelmaker Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, EAF-based sheet steelmaker Beta Steel, and multi-plant integrated steelmaker National Steel Corp (now about 40% of U.S. Steel’s U.S.-based steel plants) between 1994 and 2007, also reporting directly to the CEO in both cases.

George started his career at U.S. Steel as Manager Quality Assurance at the Gary-IN Works – the largest plant of U.S. Steel and the largest steel plant in the western Hemisphere. From 1989 to 1993 George designed and led programs that achieved the following reductions:

  •  Internal rejections by 60%
  • Cost-of-quality by more than $20 per ton
  • Customer claims by 61%
  • Automotive flat metal rejections by 82%
  • Total work place injuries by 25%
