Dr. Joseph Poveromo

Senior Iron Ore and Blast Furnace Specialist

Dr. Poveromo is a world-recognized specialist in iron ore, DRI and blast furnace operations. He holds a B.S. Chemical Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and M.Sc. and Ph.D in Chemical Engineering, Center for Process Metallurgy at State University of New York at Buffalo.

He started his career in the Research Department of Bethlehem Steel Corporation where, through 1993, he Provided technical leadership for Raw Materials & Iron-making Research & Technology including sintering, blast furnace facilities and affiliated iron ore facilities. He served on Bethlehem’s Corporate Raw Materials Management, Iron Ore Advisory, Coke Oven Facility, and Iron-making Technical Committees. He was also Project Leader blast furnace charging practices, process control & data acquisition systems, refractory & cooling systems, pellet property improvements, and Internal consultant to other Corporate Departments (Accounting, Engineering, Purchasing, Natural Resources) on issues of raw materials, furnace design and process economics;

From 1993 to 2010, he served as Director of Technology-International and Technical Marketing Director for ArcelorMittal Mines Canada (formerly Quebec Cartier Mining Co.) the second largest iron ore producer in Canada. He introduced QCM concentrate to North American, Asian, E. Europe sinter plants and to IDI hot metal process; introduced QCM DR pellets to Mid-East, South America, SE Asia Midrex DR plants providing consulting on iron ore pellet, sintering ore quality improvement, technical service to QCM customers on sinter plant, blast furnace operation, iron ore product development (lower SiO2 concentrate, lower SiO2 fluxed pellets, improved DR grade pellets), explored alternative iron- making for QCM ores.
